Elmham News - February 2020
What a few months we have had since the last edition of Elmham News! A general election, wildfires in Australia, Christmas, Christians killed in Nigeria, and more unrest in the Middle East. Amidst all this we have heard choruses of ‘Happy New Year’ echo around the world, bringing hope, or despair, to many. What will this new year, and indeed new decade, bring?
Despite all the cries of ‘Happy New Year’, the world in general terms doesn’t want us to be happy. After all, if we are truly happy and comfortable with what we have then we won’t want the latest gadgets and gizmos for example. We need to be in a perpetual state of not-quite-happiness, because only the latest model can truly make us happy, so the slick adverts tell us, so we need to buy more, or have this or that, then we will be truly happy they say.
As Christians, we have just celebrated the birth of Christ Jesus, the true source of hope in a broken and never-quite-reaching-full-happiness world. Psalm 37 says:
Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; 2 for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.
3 Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. 4 Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: 6 He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.
